Historic reform of First Nations education system announced


Standoff Alberta- Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP, Mark Strahl joined Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Minister Bernard Valcourt and National Chief Shawn Atleo to announce that an historic agreement with the Assembly of First Nations had been reached to reform the First Nations K-12 education system.

Local First Nation youth to benefit from skills training


Ottawa- Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP, Mark Strahl announced that the Seabird, Chawathil, Shxwowhamel, Squiala, Cheam, and Union Bar First Nations will all participate in a program to connect youth with skills training.

"I'm very pleased that, through this additional funding, area First Nations youth will have new opportunities to gain the skills they need to obtain employment," said Strahl.

Women living on reserve gain new rights under Conservative Government


Chilliwack- Mark Strahl, MP for Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon said he was very proud that women, children and families living on First Nation reserves will have access to the same matrimonial rights as those living off reserves thanks to the Family Homes on Reserves and Matrimonial Interests of Rights Act.

The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, announced that the first element of the Act came into force earlier this week.

Youth invited to take the Canada Day Challenge

Local First Nations to have greater say in managing their own land


Ottawa- Today, the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, accompanied by Chief Robert Louie of the First Nations Land Advisory Board and Chief Austin Bear of the First Nations Land Management Regime welcomed nine more First Nations into the First Nations Land Management Regime including Cheam, Chawathil, and Scowlitz First Nations.

Strahl salutes Bomber Command Veterans


Ottawa- Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP, Mark Strahl stood in the House of Commons today to salute two local Bomber Command Veterans:

"Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honour Chilliwack heroes, Flying Officer Dave Barrett and Warrant Officer Bernie McNicholl, for their service in Bomber Command Operations during World War II.

"Flying Officer Barrett was a pilot in Mosquito Bombers serving with the "Pathfinders", flying ahead of the Bomber Squadrons to light up the target areas.

Unique program helps bring Canadian innovations to market


Ottawa- Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP Mark Strahl is encouraging local businesses to participate in a unique federal procurement program, the Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP), which can help them bring their innovative products and services to the commercial market.

"The idea is to help Canadian entrepreneurs commercialize their innovative product by connecting them to potential clients in the federal government," said Strahl.

Kids’ safety the priority in new anti-cyberbullying bill


Ottawa- Keeping children safe from online predators and online exploitation is the priority of new legislation introduced by the Conservative Government said Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP, Mark Strahl.

"Online harassment and exploitation can victimize our children even when they are in the relative safety of their own homes." Strahl added, "This bill recognizes the devastating impact this criminal activity can have on young lives."

Conservative Government on track to balance budget in 2015


Ottawa- Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP, Mark Strahl lauded Finance Minister Jim Flaherty's Economic update which confirmed that the Conservative Government is on track to a balanced budget in 2015, with an expected surplus of $3.7 billion in 2015-16.
