MP Strahl responds to Trudeau Liberal Fall Economic Statement

OTTAWA – Mark Strahl, Member of Parliament for Chilliwack—Hope is responding to Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s Fall Economic Statement:

“The Liberal Minister of Finance tabled the government’s Fall Economic Statement this week. Justin Trudeau is running a historic deficit of $400 billion – and still leaving millions of Canadians behind.”

“This is the longest time in Canadian history that our country has ever gone without a full federal budget. What we needed was a plan to get Canada back on track, but we didn’t get that in this Economic Statement.”

“The Canadian economy was already showing serious signs of weakness before this pandemic hit. Ignoring our warnings, the Liberals took pride in running large structural deficits and raising taxes in good economic times.”

“The Trudeau Liberals have wasted precious time between the first and second waves of this pandemic. They lack a plan at the most critical time in recent Canadian history. Canada’s unemployment rate is higher than the G7, OECD, and European Union averages. Under Justin Trudeau, Canada is the only G7 country without a plan to restart our economy and we are falling behind on vaccines and rapid testing.”

“The Economic Statement makes it clear that the Liberals still have no plan to help the thousands of Canadians who are looking for work or the tens of thousands of businesses who have been hard hit by the pandemic.”

“While many of our peer countries are talking about offering mass COVID-19 vaccinations for their citizens in January, our government is talking about Canadians not having access to vaccines until September at the earliest. The Minister of Health talks a great deal about caring for Canadians, but there is only one way to describe how we got into this situation: incompetence.”

“Instead of providing certainty and a plan forward for economic recovery, the Liberals are using the cover of a pandemic to increase taxes on online streaming services like Netflix, Crave and Disney Plus.”

“The Liberals are also increasing taxes on sending and receiving packages at a time when more people than ever are relying on delivery services.”

“We need to get this country working again. Conservatives want to see an economic plan that is focused on worker-led economic recovery and growth; not a plan that just redistributes a record amount of borrowed money. Canadians are counting on us to help lead our nation out of this crisis, rebuild Canada, and help workers get ahead.”

“Canadians deserve certainty, clarity, and competence from their government. Canadians deserve a real plan for the challenges we face today, so that our children will have greater opportunities tomorrow. Unfortunately, we didn’t get that from Justin Trudeau and the Liberals in this Economic Statement. Conservatives cannot support this Economic Statement when it comes to a vote in the House of Commons.”
